Here we go then August
Well here it is my very first blog, I really struggled to think of a subject for my first month, so I thought an insight into my day to day in the height of wedding season. From then on each month try to make it different, some will be informative, covering subjects that might or might not interest you😆 and others that will be pure waffle no doubt, but I hope you enjoy them and come back every month.
So it’s August and bang in the middle of wedding season, however there seems to be increasingly out of summer and midweek weddings, becoming more popular as they can be considerably cheaper. My season started late this year at the end of May and it’s right up until Christmas week this year, with a break in November, Thank goodness 😅
My days are spent doing admin as much as actual floristry in wedding season, I can spend hours pricing, sourcing and ordering flowers, finding props such as arches, pedestals or vases. I then get easily distracted looking at ridiculously expensive candles or linens! 🤣
The few months running up to a wedding I am intouch with my bride frequently, finalising buttonhole numbers and delivery details etc This can be extremely time consuming if I have 2 or 3 wedding in one weekend. The week before the big day I’ll be on the laptop buying the flowers and other aunties such a ribbons, I order from Holland via a wholesaler or local flower farmer depending on the wedding style.
Once the flowers are in the studio it’s a case of unwrapping and what we call in the trade conditioning, this is the removal of all leaves below the water line in the buckets and on some flower removing all leaves, thorns and guard petals, I can’t express what a mess my studio gets in during this! I can be ankle deep in leaves and easily fill a bin bag of cellophane and cardboard (to recycle of course). Once everything is cut and in fresh water the prep begins.
Preparation of the delivery boxes for the bouquets and buttonholes, making sure glass vases are sparkling and table centre pieces are greened with foliage is the start, depending on the amount ordered will determine when I start on the bouquets, and I will always do buttonholes on the morning of the wedding. It surprises me still how long it takes to wrap it all and pack for delivering.
I still get that nervous excitement when presenting a bride with her bouquet and if there’s tears shed, I will end up with them too! 🥹 Until next time, love Sam x
